There is only one God.
If you have come to this question, then you believe that there is something above us, and that this is a personal force that can be known. The question must then be asked if this force is singular or plural; a solitary principal source, or multiple streams contributing to the whole.
“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.” – Isaiah 44:8
“Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.” – Isaiah 43:10
Logically everything has to have a head, a starting point, a decision maker and a responsibility taker. Take for example a textbook or history book where several people are involved writing different portions or chapters of the overall work. Without an editor to make sure things blend well and care for differences; the work would suffer.
Almost all countries have a head of state, president, prime minister, dictator or some other person who is at the top of the pyramid. They make decisions and take the responsibility for the results. Beyond countries, even states, regions, cities and villages all have governors, mayors, or chiefs. Councils, organizations, businesses all have magistrates, CEOs, and bosses.
Just like society, religions have heads too. Some religions believe that a certain being is the head of one area of the earth and another being is in charge of a different part. For instance some may believe that rain comes by one god while the sun is from another god. Even some people who believe that there are many gods will only worship one of those gods, or they may believe that one god is greater than the other gods. For instance Ahura Mazda in Zoroastrianism, or Zeus in Greek mythology.
“Even the gods who are not his natural children address him as Father, and all the gods rise in his presence.” – Illiad
These political and social patterns demonstrate the necessity and practicality of one God. Two equally powerful gods would cause confusion and disorder. Just imagine a liberal and a conservative in charge of a country at the same time with no balance or way of dividing their responsibilities.
Just as humans cannot have two genetic fathers, neither can there be two creators. There can be only one God who is the founder, creator, and father of everything we know to exist.
Divine Revelation clearly tells us that there is one real Almighty God, but that there are other things which people call gods, or things that are worshiped as if they were gods.
God or gods
Everything starts with defining your words. If “god” simply means a powerful being, then yes there is more than one god. Biblically, Satan has some power and is called god in 2 Corinthians 4:4. If a god refers to a spiritual being, then again biblically angels would be gods. The Bible also refers to civil magistrates on several occasions as gods (Exodus, 22:28, Psalms 82:1, Psalms 138:1). Jesus used these passages as a defense against attacks on his own claim of being called God (John 10:34-36). Just because people may refer to something as a god does not mean that it is the God.
For this point, when we refer to the God we are speaking of not just a powerful being, a spiritual being, or a judge, but the one who created all of those things.
“As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God…” – 1 Corinthians 8:4-6
Do you agree with the logical position and theological truth that there can be only one Almighty God?
